Tampa Electric’s Environmental Commitment
Through its $1.2 billion program to reduce emissions across its generating fleet, its Renewable Energy program and customer energy-saving programs that pre-date state and federal mandates, Tampa Electric has made environmental responsibility and energy efficiency top priorities. With the recent completion of its Chicago Climate Exchange Phase I agreement, the company is generating power in compliance with the most rigorous standards for greenhouse gas emissions available in North America today.
Advanced controls at its power stations have reduced the company’s five major types of air emissions overall compared to 1998 levels: sulfur dioxide by 93 percent; nitrogen oxides by 65 percent; particulate matter by more than 70 percent; mercury by more than 70 percent; and carbon dioxide by 20 percent.
Renewable Energy lets Tampa Electric customers partner with the company to increase the use of renewable sources for electricity generation. Tampa Electric’s energy-saving programs, in place since the late 1970s, have offset the need to generate enough electricity to serve 567,136 average-size homes over a 12-month period.
