Carbon Offset
The following are some Internet resources and information about Carbon Offsets. It is a complex issue, but the basic concept is to do something to "make up for" carbon emissions which are unavoidable.
CO2 emission equivalency for the average commute trip annually equals approx. 238 gallons of gasoline consumed per year (assumes 20 miles per day @ 21 mpg for 250 workdays per year) or 53.8 tree seedlings grown for 10 years or the carbon sequestered annually equal to 0.48 acre of pine or fir forest.

Transportation is the largest and fastest growing end use sector. Contributed 27% of US GHG emissions in 2004. (World Resources Institute)
